Nana and Popi were inspired by long time friends, Harry and Patty Carpenter. My teacher, Mike, suggested I follow up the ballerinas with a ‘couple’ bas relief with two profiles.
I learned a lot while sculpting their beautiful smiles! It is particularly challenging sculpting friends because everyone knows immediately, if they look like the original or not. Capturing that special ‘something’ that says, “you” is not easy!
My teacher taught me so much about how to add the different levels to show depth and layering while giving the illusion of a sculpture in the round.
I have plans to begin another bas relief of my sister and her husband soon.
